Alternative Measures:  profit for the Community

The law provides now also for the possibility to access alternative measures even from liberty, for people with specific conditions, without entering prison in order to undergo an tailored treatment called Community Benefit Works  (CBW).

FIT collaborates with CIRE (Centre for Insertion & Reinsertion) so that people avoiding imprisonment can work in our premises in the different activities the foundation has (workshops, shops, cloth selection, building maintenance, and so on) coordinated by the Training and Insertion department.

Mario Pagonabarraga, at the left of the councillor Mar Serna, together with Sara Berbel and other representatives of FEICAT.

The new  Federation of Insertion Companies of Catalonia –FEICAT- was born on April 24th , and has forty company members. The act that took place at the Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona was closed by Sara Berbel -director general Equal Changes at Work- and Mario Pagonabarraga, the new  president of FEICAT.  Pagonabarraga says that FEICAT is born to unify  the Insertion Enterprises registered in the Work Department of the Catalan Government in one only federation to put goals in common.

This new federation is a result of the unifying of two other federations existing so far: Aires (Inter-sector Association of Social Collectors and Enterprises of Catalonia, and ACEI (Catalan Association of Insertion Companies). Other companies that did not belong to either of them have also joined the new Federation. All this is a result of the legislation changes occurred in January, the support given by the Work Department of the Catalan Government and the awareness of both platforms of a need of unifying both working areas.

Cooperative Roba Amiga is Born

On February 4th the cooperative Roba Amiga was born.  Initially known as a job insertion project through the use of second hand clothing.  The act in where the presentation took place, in La Pedrera and presided by Miquel Perdiguer, director of  the Obra Social de Caixa de Catalunya, Francesc Baltasar, councillor for enviroment and housing of the Generalitat of Catalonia and  l’Imma Mayol, councillor for environment at 6 the Barcelona City Hall.

The program, integrated by six social enterprises including FIT, is based on the task made in these last years dedicated to the recovering and management of used clothing  and the creation of new jobs for people in risk of social exclusion.

Thanks to this work it is possible to recover and recycle textile material that avoids accumulating this kind of waste in the territory. Its is calculated that the clothes consumption is between 7 and 10 kilos per person every year without counting on that amount generated by  the own textile industry.

The other companies within the cooperative are: Adad (Olot), Recicla Girona (Salt), Recibaix (Cornellà de Llobregat), Solidança (Sant Joan Despí) and Hallazgos (Lleida). Its  president is Josep Maria Elvira and the director is  Àgata Soler-Roig.
